Setting up Snak
Snak is a shareware IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client for Mac OS X. You can download it from Versiontracker at this link.
After installation, start Snak. The first time you run Snak, the Setup Assistant will appear.
- Click the right arrow to go to screen 2.
- Enter your preferred nickname. Recommended nicknames contain the user's name and location and have the form
KenBowman-TAMU
LauraPan-GV
BillHall-NCAR
with the user's name and current location. You can provide an alternative nickname. Your e-mail address might be a good choice.
- Click the arrow to go to screen 3.
- For Favorite network enter NCAR/EOL.
- For Favorite server enter rdcc.guest.ucar.edu.
- In Rooms to join enter "#GV, #START08" and check Connect automatically when the program starts up.
- Click the arrow to go to screen 4 and then click OK.
- When the main chat window opens you should see several tabs (buttons) along the top. Click on the Profiles tab, then double-click the NCAR/EOL item in the list.
- Click on rdcc.guest.ucar.edu in the Servers list, and then click the Edit button. For Port enter 6668. Check the Use SSL box and click OK.
- Enter the password (provided by NCAR).
- The Startup Cmds. should be "/join #GV, #START08".
- Check Automatically connect and click OK.
- Restart Snak to check that the configuration is correct. It should automatically connect to the NCAR/EOL server and the START08 and GV chatrooms.
- The START08 chatroom is for general discussions, nowcasting, etc. The GV chatroom is for instrument chat, contacting people, and reporting problems.
